As the holiday season has arrived, we thought it would be fun to post a vintage Christmas postcard from our collection. This example is particularly appealing because it truly reflects the decade in which it was made. It dates from the 1930s, and its design reflects the Art Deco movement. The cool tones of black, white, blue and grey give it that “Industrial Age” look in a time when steel skyscrapers were transforming cityscapes and modern furniture designs in chrome and other metals were just coming into vogue. But it also shows that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The couple in the card have Christmas shopping to do, just as folks do today. This lady has her husband carrying all the packages. Judging by all the men I see in the mall carrying Bath and Body Works bags, that hasn’t changed either! Which reminds me, I’ve still got a few more gifts to get. Have you started your holiday shopping yet?
