Foster House “landscaping”

Lois Whitten, one of the regular Wednesday afternoon volunteers, kindly donated some hosta plants which she and House Chair Patrick Carrette planted along one side of the Foster House. The addition of these plants has greatly improved the outward appearance of the house.

Needed repairs Felton Jr. House

Much needed repairs have begun at the Jr. House by GC Carpentry. However, the work recently ran into a snag when termites were discovered. Unfortunately, the damage from termites was more extensive than first thought but we are glad that this was discovered before things got worse. Estimates for the extermination work have been obtained and the work will be completed soon.

Letter to the Editor

We recently received our first ‘fan’ letter from our member Linda Tremblay of Peabody who wrote as follows:

Attention: Wizard
“Greetings,

Enclosed you will find a travel brochure for the Lee Chapel & Museum at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. My husband and I are from Peabody and we are Civil War Re-enactors. For our vacations, we like to visit Virginia and visit battlefields, museums, etc. This year, we decided to visit Lexington, VA for all of its history. [Previously] we had seen a photo of George Peabody with Robert E. Lee [when he was] donating toward Public Education in the South. When we visited the Chapel, we mentioned it to the museum guide. Her face turned to delight. She said she had, of course, heard of Mr. George Peabody and said to go downstairs and look over the mantle in “General’s office.” There was, a portrait of George Peabody. The office remains just as Lee left it in 1870, with a Yankee over the mantle. I thought you might enjoy seeing this brochure and hearing my story. We smiled the whole day after that !

Sincerely,
Linda Tremblay
