Peabody Square (looking towards Lowell Street) in winter, ca. early 20th century

We’ve been pretty lucky so far in that we haven’t yet had any real accumulation of snow this winter season, unlike other parts of the country this week. But with the holiday season in full swing, we’re feeling a bit nostalgic for wintertime traditions of the past. This photograph depicts Peabody Square after a snowstorm, in a time when people really did ride in one-horse open sleighs. Yet the transition to modern transportation is already underway: if you look closely you can see an electric trolley coming around the Civil War Monument.
