Andrew Metropolis History Scholarship

The Peabody Historical Society awards a $2500 scholarship to a graduating Peabody Veterans Memorial High School senior who plans to pursue a career involving history, museum studies, historic preservation, or political science. This scholarship honors Peabody Historical Society’s Historian, and former history teacher Andrew Metropolis. Metropolis’ unique style of teaching history inspired many of his students to pursue careers in history-related fields.

The 2019 winner of the Andrew M. Metropolis scholarship funded by the Peabody Historical Society was Claudio Rocha. After graduation from Peabody Veteran’s Memorial High School, this fall Claudio will attend Assumption College. He will pursue studies in history and education. During high school, Claudio has amassed an outstanding record in Cross Country, indoor and outdoor track. He has captained all three teams and was recognized by the Salem News as “Runner of the Year” and by the Northeast Conference as “Student Athlete of the Year.” He participated in Student Government Day at the high school as a Councilor-at-large. Claudio is a member of the National Honor Society, a peer tutor and a mentor for the Challenger Basketball program for Special Needs children. He plans to become a high school history teacher.
